Abstract
This study aims to examine the implications of the privatization of Islamic education on educational quality and accessibility for economically disadvantaged groups. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis across Ma’had Aly institutions in the Tapal Kuda region, East Java. The findings indicate that privatization significantly enhances educational quality by providing improved facilities, fostering continuous professional development for educators, and enabling a more flexible, relevant curriculum. Contrary to prevailing literature that associates privatization with prohibitive costs, this study reveals that tuition at Ma’had Aly remains affordable due to financial support from its parent pesantren foundations. However, accessibility challenges persist—not due to financial barriers, but because of the stringent academic standards and rigorous entrance examinations required for admission. These findings suggest that privatization in Islamic higher education can drive quality improvement while maintaining financial affordability, though high academic barriers may still limit access for candidates lacking prior pesantren backgrounds
